Sustainable water reuse in the potato sector

Product group: Processing

Azulatis is a pioneer in the field of water reuse within the potato industry. Since the construction of the first installation in Flanders for Farm Frites in 2007, we have further expanded our expertise and now manage 13 water reuse installations. These installations provide more than 3,000,000 m³ of process water annually, derived from purified wastewater.

Azulatis adopts a holistic approach to water usage, proposing the best possible technologies to ensure a robust, efficient, and sustainable process. We manage the installations according to the DBFMO model (Design, Build, Finance, Maintain, Operate), meaning we are responsible for the complete management of the installations.

Through this approach, Azulatis helps companies in the potato industry optimize their water usage and contribute to a more sustainable future. 🌱💧

At Lutosa Waregem, we have implemented a sustainable water reuse solution with Azulatis. Thanks to the holistic approach to the water balance, Azulatis has developed an advanced solution that includes pre-filtration, acidification with CO₂ (instead of mineral salts), coagulation, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis. This allows Lutosa to reuse 50 m³/h or more than 70% of their purified wastewater. This has led to a significant reduction of 133 tons of sulfate and 117 tons of chlorides per year. Additionally, water consumption has drastically decreased from 3.6 liters per kilogram of fries to just 2.0 liters per kilogram. Thanks to the design, construction, operation, and quality assurance by Azulatis, Lutosa can efficiently use this water throughout the entire production process, which not only saves costs but also contributes to more sustainable operations.

Added value for the user (in commercial terms, user-friendliness ...)
By using CO2 for acidification, fewer sulfates and chlorides are added to the water. This makes it easier to obtain permits for our solutions compared to standard methods. By reusing their own purified water, Lutosa becomes less dependent on external sources, can recover heat, and reduce production costs. Additionally, this further contributes to the sustainability of the client and, by extension, the entire industry.

Added value for the further sustainability and professionalization of the potato sector.
By adopting sustainable water reuse practices, the sector can further reduce its water footprint and environmental impact. Additionally, the sector becomes less sensitive to external factors, making it easier to convince regulatory authorities for potential factory expansion within the same water and environmental impact limits.
