Sustainable Potato Platform: Next Level of Crop Protection
Public attitudes towards chemical crop protection products are changing, and there is a growing demand for more sustainable farming methods. At the same time, disease pressure from fungi such as Phytophthora infestans is increasing. This fungus causes the greatest economic damage in potato cultivation. However, due to stricter legislation in Europe, the number of available chemical products and active ingredients is declining, which could lead to the emergence of new, more aggressive Phytophthora genotypes. This calls for new, sustainable solutions and an integrated approach.
Therefore, in 2023, Nufarm, together with Geersing Potato Specialist, launched the Sustainable Potato Platform (SPP). This platform focuses on researching and testing new biological crop protection products in combination with conventional pesticides, as well as studying the effects on the resistance of potato varieties. In addition to Phytophthora resistance and control, sustainable desiccation is also a key factor within the SPP. With the use of NUCROP, potato haulm is killed in a safe and effective manner by using a conductive liquid and electric current.
In the SPP, trials were conducted with both resistant (Cammeo) and non-resistant (Agria) varieties. Conventional chemical control schemes were compared with the new biofungicide and other sustainable solutions, such as biostimulants. The results demonstrate that an integrated approach with resistance management is essential for effective control.

Innovation in Potato Protection
Nufarm's innovative biological fungicide was developed specifically for combating Phytophthora infestans in potatoes. This fungal disease is one of the biggest threats to potato cultivation, and certain chemical agents are becoming less effective due to the emergence of new genotypes of the fungus. The biofungicide offers excellent protection in resistant varieties. Although the product cannot guarantee full protection in non-resistant varieties, the impact on resistant varieties remains impressive, even under high disease pressure. It prevents damage from the fungus, maintaining resistance and preventing further damage. By combining the biofungicide with other natural methods, such as biostimulants that enhance plant resilience, Nufarm offers a versatile solution. This innovation is not only effective but also aligns with the goal of promoting sustainable agriculture and reducing chemical inputs.
Added value for the user (in commercial terms, user-friendliness ...)
Effective Phytophthora Control for Growers
The combination of resistant potato varieties with this new biofungicide provides growers—both organic and conventional—with an effective solution against Phytophthora. For organic growers, the product is appealing because there are currently virtually no other options to protect crops. For conventional growers facing fewer available chemical products, this innovation offers a future-proof solution. By using this biofungicide, they can continue to protect their crops without compromising yield and/or quality.
Added value for the further sustainability and professionalization of the potato sector.
A Major Step Towards Sustainable Agriculture
Nufarm's new biofungicide plays a crucial role in the transition to more sustainable agriculture. It reduces dependence on chemical agents while preserving the resistance of resistant potato varieties. By focusing on biological crop protection products, resistant varieties, and integrated crop management, we contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for both organic and conventional potato cultivation.
